My favorite products that have stood the test of time.

2024 UPDATE

Lately, depending on how I style my hair for the day is what determines which products I use.

Routine #1

If I'm hopping in the shower, I do the following:

  1. Wash with Terressentials Mud Wash

  2. Apply the Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner for extra moisture

  3. Seal in with an oil of choice.

Routine #2

If I'm not hopping in the shower or I'm in a rush, I do the following:

  1. Spray moisturizing Essentia Water on my hair

  2. Untwist my hair from the 4 twists from the night before

  3. Apply Shea Butter

Sometimes I find that my hair needs a break from one of the oils or Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner. So I switch it up about every 6 months to a year. So at times I just use Shea Butter after washing with the Terressentials Mud Wash. And then other times I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil/Coconut Oil to seal in moisture when I just use the Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner (since the shea butter doesn't seem to pair well with the Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner).  So whichever routine my hair is more receptive to at the moment. And if I ever need to clarify my hair then I use the Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo, but this is only maybe 2-3 times per year.

I have been natural since 2012 and I am asked many times on a weekly basis what I use in my hair. In fact, that may be the question that directed you to this site! So without further ado here are my favorite products that I use in order from first to last, using the L.O.C. Method, and where you can find them.

By clicking on any of the Amazon links below, I do earn a commission on qualifying purchases as an Amazon Associate. But I only recommend products that I've actually used and are effective for me. So I hope that you find that they are as equally effective for you as well!❤️

This is my favorite hair product of all. Without this product, I couldn't achieve the definition and moisturization that I receive. I recommend that when first using this product, and to get the maximum benefit out of it, do the 7-14 day detox. When I first started using this product about four years ago, it was only 7 days. But I think now it has been updated to 14 days on their website. But even after 7 days of following the detox regimen my hair was the most moisturized, soft, and defined, it had ever been since I first went natural. Before using this product I tried the As I Am product line, and the Kinky Curly line, but nothing worked as well as this Terressentials Organic Mud Wash has. This product cleanses, lightly detangles, conditions, and detoxes your hair all at once. The best part is you don't need a lot of product for it to work. Just apply a quarter-size amount or two in sections to make sure all of your hair gets the most benefit out of this product. I purchase maybe 2-4 bottles per year since it lasts for quite a while for me since I wash my hair on a weekly basis. So you can stock up ahead of time and save on the $11 shipping fee each time. This product also can only be purchased online.

One thing I love about this product, especially this Cool Mint one is that the peppermint in this product when used on your scalp feels so great when you wash it out under the water for the second time. I tend to apply this product to my hair, then wait about 3-5 minutes while messaging my scalp, then wash it out the first time. Then apply it again but not in sections, message it in again, and then wash it out for the second time. That is when you really get the cool peppermint feeling on your scalp. I LOVE how great it feels! Another great thing about this product is that I know of no other product that also detoxifies your hair. I find that sometimes other "natural hair products" have chemicals in them that end up making your hair more dry and frizzy than it should be, making it less defined. It breaks my heart to see women using these so called natural hair products, and then they think that that is just how their texture is, when it's not. This product actually restores your hair to its natural state, especially after the 7-14 day detox program listed on their site. If you want nearly baby soft curls, defined curls, just read the "What is the detox protocol" section for instructions here and try this product. This product here is the one I spend the most for out of all of my natural hair products, and it is always well worth the price. I found out about this product from Naptural85 on YouTube. She has a great channel, and I've learned so much from her! Here is her video explaining this product to her viewers.

And here is her hair wash routine using this product.

Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner

This conditioner is the icing on the cake! I have tried some other conditioners, and nothing else I've tried has more slip, detangling, and conditioning power than this has. I tend to go crazy on with this product and use a lot in my hair. I find the more I put in, the more slip it gives, and makes it easy for my Denman D7 Brush to glide through my hair; and the wide-tooth comb after that. Before finding this conditioner also from Naptural85, I could not comb through my hair. It was nearly impossible because it was so curly and easily-tangled. But after finding this wonderful conditioner, I haven't looked back. This is always my go-to conditioner.

I tend to split my hair in sections and then saturate my hair with this product root to ends. I don't hold back. Then as I said, I take the Denman Brush through first, and then the wide-tooth comb, then the Denman Brush again, just to clump my curls. My hair is practically straight at that point. And all thanks to this conditioner, I'm not yanking, pulling, or ripping my hair out. The Denman Brush and the comb slide right through, pulling out the shed-hairs and tangles. Sometimes I wash it out, and sometimes I leave it in my hair as a leave-in conditioner. But when I do wash it out, I still put a little more back in to wear as a leave-in conditioner anyways.

When I run out of this product, my hair is always in trouble. It becomes more dry, frizzy, poofy, and undefined; which is fine if you want to have big hair. But I like my hair more thin and defined looking since it is already naturally thick. If you happen to live by a Trader Joe's, then it will be easy and cheaper to purchase this product. Last time I checked it was only about $4 per bottle. But if you buy it on Amazon like in the link, then it's about $10. I tend to buy it from Amazon when I can't make it out to Trader Joe's.

#3 - Organic Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, OR Shea Butter

The oils work to seal in the moisture from the previous products. These oils can be found at your local grocery store. When I first went natural, I used Organic Coconut Oil as my staple for this step. But in the last year or so, I think my hair had built up a sort of tolerance to the Coconut Oil, and it seemed to stop working as well. So I switched to this Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and my hair has been less frizzy and more defined again. So maybe after some time you may need to switch up the oils you use. But now Extra Virgin Olive Oil is my new staple in my regimen.

I find that buying raw shea butter in a 32 oz container is about the most affordable way to obtain shea butter. Unless you know of local vendors near you that have it as well. Above I have included my Amazon link where I purchase my Shea Butter from. Raw Shea Butter just melts in your hand, and when you apply it to your hair, it seals in all of the moisture. I find when I use enough of it, it almost works like a gel to define my curls. But this works best right after washing your hair and applying the previous products first.

That's it!

These are the products I use regularly and have helped me grow my hair and maintain my length. I love that I've been able to use a low number of products that are predominantly organic and help my hair to flourish. (Not to mention affordable). When I look at some of the name brand "Natural Hair Products" I roll my eyes and feel bad for the women who think they have to pay that much money in order to have long healthy hair. Sometimes I feel like this is what happens to some of the women I talk to and they say they tried natural hair but it wasn't for them or that the products didn't work for them. But I find that actual natural or organic products truly do work for our hair the way we wish it to, and it doesn't have to require a monthly budget to have it that way.
